Local gossip

This page is updated on an ad hoc basis with local gossip that does not necessarily make it to the papers.  This won't necessarily be 100% accurate (so please don't pick holes!), and presents a view of village life. However, many of the items are based on fact.  We hope you'll be able to spot which is which.  Any views expressed are not necessarily endorsed by any official body whatsoever, but hopefully may provide you with a bit of amusement, as well as keeping you up to date on what has happened in the village. If anyone feels a comment is offensive, please be assured that none is intended to be, and email the webmaster immediately to have it amended or removed. Likewise, if you have a story to tell, also email the webmaster. All gossip welcome! And thanks to those who continue to contribute. Click on any hyperlink (like this) to be taken to the relevant page.

Your webmaster has had so many complaints from villagers over the last few weeks about not updating the gossip column that he thought he'd better pull his finger out and write something.

So, what's been going on in the village? Well, the answer is, as usual, not a lot. Or is it?

There have been quite a few sizable parties in the village. Some of which the webmaster attended, some which he could not make, and some (must have been good) that he honestly can't remember if he was there or not! But they all went off very well.

The hosepipe ban has taken its toll on pot planting through the village, and many people simply haven't bothered to plant up their pots this year as watering would be too much hassle. There are rumours that certain upstanding members of the community are getting round the hosepipe ban by devious means. But those are only rumours, of course!

Recently Brian and Eileen have been seen back in the village. Most people go on holiday to the Isle of Wight, but Brian and Eileen have turned this habit on its head, by doing it in reverse. The S family could do a lot worse than having such staunch Neighbourhood Watch members house-sitting for them.

Web visits have gone down during July, to an average of 83 people a day visiting our site. This is probably a combination of no new content (thanks to you webmaster being very lazy) and people going away on holiday. The webmaster remembers (vaguely) that last July was down on the previous month too.

The latest Parish Council meeting took place in July, and you can click here to read the minutes. There's lots that may affect you, so do take the time to look at them. For instance, are you a thatcher? Or do you know one? The bus shelter's thatch needs renewing (as does the webmaster's, but that's another matter). Do the village a favour and get a quote into the PC. Amongst other matters was a question about fire hydrants. Now, we all know there are a lot of dogs in the village, but isn't this taking pet-pampering a bit far? Then again, there are also a lot of thatched cottages in the village, and the river is getting drier by the year, so a hydrant or two might not be such a bad idea. It was also noted that trees in the recreation ground had been chopped down. It's a matter of opinion whether this is a crime against the country, silly vandalism, or just kids having fun!

The village has embraced the new waste recycling initiative by our council with gusto. So have the maggots. And the flies. We should all salute the council for taking this into their hands so decisively, but there are a few things they should have thought through more clearly. We are told that they will not collect plastic or cardboard, and that we should take them to tips at Eversleigh or Devizes. Now, those are both lovely places to visit, but has the council thought how much petrol would be consumed if each home in the village was to make that trip specially once a week? The webmaster is no oil sheik, but guesses it would be quite a lot. Not to mention the extra atmospheric pollution that would be unnecessarily generated. And as anyone with kids knows, disposing of food-tainted plastics and cardboard is not easy. Cereal packets, crisp packets, meat wrapping, and so on. All these are difficult to dispose of under the new regime. The Council needs to put pressure on the supermarkets who insist on packaging everything in vast amount of plastic and cardboard.

And the flies. Well, with the recent spate of hot weather caused by global warming, combined with leaving rubbish in the black wheelie bins for 2 weeks (it used to be just one week) has some revolting results. Your webmaster opened his the other day on collection day, to find the inside crawling with thousands of maggots. And this was after wrapping everything very carefully before it was put in there. The Council has no solution for this, and does not even give out black bags any more. Those unfortunate enough to have to store their bins for 2 weeks inside their homes in this weather face a serious health issue. So wake up, Kennet Council, do something fast before you have to spend millions on curing people who have become ill as a result of your new policy.

As a result of the mass sell-off of houses in the village, new faces are appearing all the time, not to mention the black London cab which is now resident here. So, a warm welcome to everyone who is new to the village.

The red kites are still to be seen circling the village in their leisurely manner. Could be something to do with the pub's landlord feeding them scraps. And there seem to have been more butterflies than normal this year. The webmaster has spotted the following in a garden in the centre of the village: Brimstone, Red Admiral, Peacock, Cabbage White, Comma, Meadow Brown, Small Tortoiseshell, and even (just today) a Chalk Blue. Check out www.britishbutterflies.co.uk if you'd like to see them all. Although it takes ages to download, it's a beautiful web site.

Finally, back to that old chestnut, the village fete. Does anyone out there want to be chairman (or woman) for next year? Unconfirmed rumours from a reliable source have it that the chair for the last two years has resigned, as has the treasurer. There are lots of people here in the village who are younger than the outgoing chairman who, in his twilight years has decided to stand down. Any volunteers can email the webmaster who will pass on any message to the outgoing fete chair.

Well, the webmaster, who is also in his twilight years, thinks that's enough for now. There's a risk of RSI developing from all this typing. Email the webmaster if you have any news to report.

OK, so your webmaster has been a bit slack in updating the village web site recently. Apologies!  It must be reported that half the village seems to be up for sale at the moment. There are no less than 7 properties for sale on the main street, and quite a few others too. Demand is high, with offers apparently being received very quickly. People obviously are keen to move to the village.
Dateline: 1 July 2006
The web stats are available now for June, and show a record average of 114 people per day visiting our web site through that month. The highest number recorded was 207 people on June 6th.

The school fete took place yesterday, and was a great success. The weather was fabulous,  and everyone had a lovely time. As well as all the usual stalls, plants, cakes, etc, the organisers had managed to persuade a couple of real daleks to turn up. Needless to say, these were a great success.
Dateline: 19 June 2006
Great news in the village. We have another new inhabitant as of Friday. Amanda gave birth to Katie Charlotte, who was born to Amanda weighing  7lb. Now, it sounds like Amanda did all the work (well, really she did!) but. as we all know, from our biology exams, the bloke has to do something as well to start the process. So well done Amanda and David. David tells us that Emily is thrilled to bits with her new toy. Welcome to the village Katie!

Loads more pictures of the fete have been delivered to the webmaster. Click here to see them. You might be in one!

The village fete has happened. And was a great success. It was an archetypal, but different, English village fete. The weather helped. Of course, the fete chairman had done his best to organise this, and it seems to have worked. Thanks to anyone above who enabled this.  Click here to see the first of the pictures. There are more coming, so watch this space. It looks like the net proceeds raised for the village were just under £5,000. The chair (outgoing) and the committee would like to thank everyone who helped, sponsored, and visited, for all your support. Which was considerable. Roll on next year!
Dateline: 2 June 2006
The village is gearing up for its annual fete tomorrow, and the weather is looking good right now. We all hope it holds out. There have been a couple of cancellations due to illness (Kaya Drums), and the stage and fashion show (due to someone forgetting the date), but there's lots going on all the same, and it promises to be a great day for all the family. Raffle tickets will be on sale at the fete, and there are some great prizes to be won, including two plane rides and a fabulous brand new mountain bike. Make sure you're there from 12.30 to 3.30pm to join in the fun. Click here to see the up to date list of events.

You know how much your webmaster likes to bore you with statistics, so here are the latest. Well, either you people are not visiting the web enough because the webmaster has not been updating the gossip column as frequently, or perhaps it's because the server was down for 3 days, but the number of visitors coming to our site each day has fallen to an average of 71 a day in May. That's down from April (104) and March (112). Oh well, it's still the third best month in the last 12 months, and no doubt it will pick up again. Keep on coming!
Dateline: 31 May 2006
There is much property-orientated gossip in the village at the moment. Stud Farm House, on the main road, went on the market 4/5 weeks ago for £775,000, and apparently an offer was accepted just a few weeks after for £950,000, and there was masses of interest besides that.  There are also several other houses in the village on the market, and coming on the market soon. It appears we live in a very popular little village!
Dateline: 30 May 2006
The village held a cricket match yesterday on Bank Holiday Monday. It was a fairly ramshackle affair (as usual) and was plagued by rain. Your webmaster hit a fast ball straight into his eye, and got a nice bruise. Terry the Pipe made a spectacular slide when batting, and hurt his arm. And Ian strained both ligaments. Of well, I suppose us older members of the community really should not engage in such dangerous sports.  A great time was had by all!

It's all change in the village after last night's Parish Council meeting. Following Brian and Eileen Keen's departure from the village, there were spaces for two new Parish Councillors. And who are the new faces? Nick Fritz and Lynne Quinton. Both are noted for their dynamism, so we're sure that they will be great replacements for the hard-working Keens.

Nothing much to report at the moment, apart from the red kites which still continue to fascinate villagers. They are coming lower and lower over the centre of the village and Stag Hill.
Dateline: 25 April 2006
Two of the village's magazine publishers were spotted in the pub early last night. All right Jack? There aren't many publishers iin the village, so you won't have too much difficulty guessing who they were. Not only that, but two of the fete committee members were there too. As was the chair of the Youth Club. As was your webmaster. And there were only six people in the pub at that time. And two of them were none of the aforementioned. If anyone wants to donate a prize for working it out, let the webmaster know, and if you want to enter this (so far) hypothetical competition, also let the webmaster know.
Dateline: 24 April 2006
Have you ever seen a Red Kite (if you don't know, it's a very large bird of prey) gliding through the sky only metres above your head? Our village has 8 pairs of these fabulous birds nesting here, and this weekend they really made their presence felt  Many of us in the centre of the village spent the best part of the day on Saturday just watching these beautiful, huge creatures slowly circling on the thermals. Luckily, they decided not to snatch the webmaster's cat, who would have been horrified (and probably dead too - Ed,).  They really were fabulous, and a privilege to watch. It looks like they're here to stay. Let's hope so.

The minutes of the last village hall management committee have now been posted on the web site. Click here to read them. Most of the content is about routine maintenance and events, but there is one item that will interest many people in the village. Brian and Eileen have announced their resignation from the committee as they are leaving the village.

They have been responsible for supporting much that goes on in the village, from sitting on the parish council for many years, to their active involvement in many activities in the village.  There are fears that the village hall may fall down because Brian is no longer the maintenance officer, and he did much for keeping the hall together. But Mr F has stepped in and so we hope the village will be spared a derelict building in its centre.  There is also the risk that crime may become a major issue in the village, as Brian was a dedicated Neighbourhood Watch community liaison volunteer.  And of course, meetings in the hall will take on a different character without Eileen's meticulous secretarial skills..

So the Isle of Wight gains two valuable new members for its community, and we lose two. C'est la vie! We wish them well.

Dateline: 2 April 2006
Well, April Fool's Day passed yesterday without incident. You'll  remember that last year someone renamed the village Nick Foliat, because fo all the people called Nick who live in the village.

The web site stats for March are now with us, and we had a record 112 people a day visiting the web site, with no less than 240 on 31 March alone. Wow! Considering pur population is just over 300, this really is quite remarkable.

Dateline: 31 March 2006 (and again!)
It's all go today in the village.  Just a few minutes ago at lunchtime, a lorry travelling through the village dropped a large bag of  something (sawdust possibly?) in the road. And he didn't notice.  Faster than the blick of an eye, a well-know villager (no, not the webmaster), drove his van up and 'rescued' it.

The fete pages are now live on the web site. Get on-line now to buy your raffle tickets. There are loads of goodies up for grabs.  Do your bit to support the village and its facilities, and you could be the lucky winner of a flight in a private jet or lots of meals out in local hostelries. Good luck! Please note that fete committee members and their families are not allowed to buy tickets this year. So you need to buy loads more to make up for this loss of revenue!

The following email was received from a villager following the very recent email broadcast (in the last hour) to our newsletter subscribers.

find it surprising that you did not take the chance to mention that anyone involved in a car accident and therefore in need of a new car need look no further than you excellent publication to be found in you local supermarket (Somerfield) or indeed right outside your front door... Mr C

So nothing ever happens around here?  Well, it didn't until this morning. Your webmaster was sound asleep in bed at 8.45am (a rare attempted lie in). His better half (who was already up) rushed in to wake him up and said he must come outside because something had happened in the road. He dashed out of bed, without even brushing his hair (so he looked a bit like Ken Dod on a bad day), to see complete mayhem.  Just outside the square was a low-loader lorry in the middle of the road, with three cars looking as though they had been chucked about like a giant's toys. They were crunched and smashed all over the place. Click here for the pictures, hot off the press.

As it was Chilton Foliat's rush hour, traffic was backing up in both directions, and there was complete chaos.  Mrs Smith, whose car was one of those wrecked, and the webmaster became human traffic lights, stopping the traffic going one way so that the road could clear.  Without walkie-talkies, it was a bit of a challenge, but we managed it until the fire engines arrived.  The webmaster's other half supplied a much-needed cup of tea to the distraught lorry driver.

Two fire engines and two police cars came quickly, and very soon the centre of the village resembled downtown L.A. .So what had happened?

A low-loader lorry was driving along minding his own business going west, and all of a sudden one of the hydraulic legs shot out on his right side, straight into the parked cars.  Luckily nobody was in the cars at the time, so there were no injuries. But the three cars were write-offs. The poor lorry driver was more shocked than anyone. Peter B, from the village, happened to be driving behind the lorry, and saw everything!

Needless to say, the owners of the cars are not particularly happy, but on the other hand are glad they were not in their cars.  The local garage (Stag Service Station) came down immediately to see if they could help, and got some instant new business. It was a lovely sight to see John from the garage reversing one of the mangled cars (a white van) all the way up the road to the garage.

But it's bad news for the traffic speed in the village. The three cars, who always park there, act as a traffic calming measure that does not cost the Parish Council a penny. In the short term, anyway, they won't be there any more, and Chilton Foliat's rush hour will become even more hairy than it is already.

Don't forget, you read it here first on the Chilton Foliat web site.

Finally, just as everything was being cleared up in the village at about 10.15am, news came via the postman that there was a bad accident up by the Pheasant pub at Shefford Woodlands.  Traffic was being diverted down Stag Hill, adding to the traffic chaos in the middle of the village. What a morning!

Not a lot has happened in the village since the last entry. But there are roadworks on the Hungerford side of the Littlecote corner, and your webmaster was nearly wiped out the other day gojng round the corner.  A lorry coming from the Hungerford direction was on the webmaster's side of the road, and only just stopped in time. The webmaster had to go up on the kerb, because 3 huge lorry wheels (each higher than the car) were only inches from his face, and threatened to make create a webmaster and car sandwich.

All submissions are welcome, provided they are not illegal.  Just email them to the webmaster.

Our little village web site is getting ever more popular.  The stats for March so far show an incredible average of 101 people every day visiting the site.  The smallest number of visitors in a day was 77, and the most 153. To put this into perspective, April 2005, a year ago, saw an average of only 44 people a day visiting us.

The video of the panto yesterday was well attended, an most of the cast were present, including the children. Last night's Youth Club meeting was poorly attended.  To put it mildly. One child (the chairman's son) turned up, and the evening was called off.  Interest in the Youth Club seems to have declined in the past few months. This is mostly due to children getting older (it happens - that's life) and the younger ones (of whom there are many in the village) being to young to join the Youth Club. Who knows what the future holds for the Youth Club?

Ramsbury, our neighbouring village, suffered a massive burglary on Wednesday night which made the national headlines.  Ramsbury Manor was the victim of a professionally organised job, and £30 million pounds worth of valuables were stolen.

Whale stranded in Chilton Foliat! Yes, you read it here first. The national news today has been full of the story about the whale that swam up the Thames and ended up outside the House of Commons. The whale must have been fed some mis-information - nobody in their right mind would want to get into Parliament!  But has the Chilton Foliat whale been featured in the news?  No.  And why not?  A whale swimming up the river Kennet has got to be more exciting than one swimming up the Thames.  Just imagine the trauma the trout must have suffered!  Not to mention the Canada Geese (who are now returning from their hols). There's a very simple reason why we are ignored by the national press.  We're just not big enough.  And not important enough. And are not MPs. And Chilton Foliat is not in London. And also .... (that's enough of this drivel - I'm deleting the rest of it. Ed.).

The webmaster notes that there have been no entries here for nearly 3 weeks.  Terrible!  Apologies to readers. This could be because nothing much has happened in the village in that period.  Apart from a horse bolting through the main street a week ago on Sunday.  It was being led, then slipped and bolted.  The webmaster's family gave chase, and the horse was found in a field just outside the village.  All's well that ends well.

And of course, the panto cast have been rehearsing furiously most nights. With the first performance this Saturday, the village is waiting with baited breath to see what the team comes up with.  Should be fun.  And check here for photos after the first performance!

Click here to see pictures of last night's New year's Eve in the village pub.  There are some very dodgy looking characters. A number of villagers are feeling delicate today.  Or if they're not, they should be!  Are you one of them?

After all that, 2006 is upon us and, amazingly, Chilton Foliat is still in one piece.

Chilton Foliat, like every community, has experienced its share of births, deaths, weddings and funerals. It has seen sun, a little snow, rain (not enough for the river though), and the frost earlier in 2005 messed up a load of people's gardens, including the webmaster's wisteria. There have been parties and wakes, the pub has changed hands again (and is now a very popular community centre), the village had a the best-attended fete ever (come on, you're biased - Ed.), and the Canada geese more than doubled the village's population almost overnight a few months ago. The youth club did have some ideas to reduce the goose population, but nobody donated the catapults required. The web site is now over a year old, and on average 60-70 people visit it every day.  If you want a more detailed review of the last year's village events, you need look no further than this gossip column.  Read on - because you're probably in it somewhere!

The webmaster would like to wish all the web site's visitors a very happy new year for 2006, and he has even created a web card to say it to you. Click here to see it.
