The Mr. X Column
This column will be updated irregularly, and brings comments about the big wide world to Chilton Foliat’s web site. Some of the material will be topical, some completely irrelevant, but all hopefully will make entertaining reading. Your correspondent, known here simply as ‘Mr X’, was a resident of the village for many years.

So Toyota are withdrawing millions of cars. This probably will not affect our village too much, since the last time your correspondent was in the village there was not a single Prius in sight. Chilton Foliat residents are obviously much more concerned about destroying the ozone layer, and paying lip-service to environmentally friendly causes (with the notable exception of the ‘O’ and ‘T’ families (OK, and some more – including the ‘C’ family), who have been very active on Green issues), than having a vehicle whose brakes fail and kills the occupants.
Hmmm….. quite a difficult one, that. Do you put the survival of the planet or your family first? And what’s your time-scale?
Mr X would be very concerned about killing his family because of a seriously defective car (not that he has ever bought a new one), but would also be concerned about killing the planet. And given the troubles some East Anglian scientists are getting into now about falsifying stats on global warning, it can be very difficult to know exactly what to believe.
Does the tree breathe, or the motor car? And which puts what into the atmosphere? Where do the CO2 emissions come from?
Having had his say on that, Mr X would like to get on his soap box (again) and say that everyone should support recycling projects of all kinds. Forget where the CO2 comes from. Does it really make sense to chuck a 2 year old sofa into the tip (because you’ve just bought a new one), and therefore landfill, when it is perfectly usable by someone who is not quite as prissy in their taste, and who certainly can’t afford the over-inflated price to buy it new? The answer is a resounding No. It makes no sense at all.
